Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a revolutionary technology in drug discovery, offering innovative solutions to overcome the limitations of conventional pharmaceutical research. Traditional drug development is a lengthy, expensive, and complex process with high failure rates, often requiring more than a decade and substantial financial investment to bring a new drug to market. AI, through techniques such as machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and predictive analytics, enables the rapid analysis of large biological, chemical, and clinical datasets, thereby accelerating various stages of drug discovery. AI applications include target identification and validation, virtual screening of chemical compounds, lead optimization, toxicity and safety prediction, drug repurposing, and optimization of clinical trial design. These technologies improve the accuracy of predictions, reduce development time and costs, and support informed decision-making throughout the drug development process. Furthermore, AI contributessignificantly to precision medicine by enabling the development of personalized treatment strategies based on patient-specific genetic and clinical information. Despite its immense potential, challenges such as data quality, algorithm transparency, regulatory approval, ethical concerns, and integration with existing drug development workflows remain important considerations. Continuous advancements in computational methods, increasing availability of high-quality biomedical data, and collaboration between pharmaceutical industries, researchers, and regulatory agencies are expected to further enhance the impact of AI in healthcare. This review highlights the fundamental concepts, key applications, recent advancements, limitations, and future prospects of AI in drug discovery. The integration of AI into pharmaceutical research has the potential to transform drug development by accelerating the discovery of safer, more effective, and cost-efficient therapeutic agents, ultimately improving patient care and global healthcare outcomes.
